We are often like teenagers who think they know better than their parents and as a result we repeat the same mistakes most people (especially Westerners) make. God lamented one time: ‘If only they had a heart to always do My will!?’
Oh, that they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me and always keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them and with their children forever!
Of course that is a New Testament heart God is referring to above. It is a Born Again heart. God lays it out here…A heart that worships Him, respects Him, so that it hears Him and does what He says. Why? So things will go well with you. God’s desire for us is that things would GO WELL WITH US. If there are any Father’s and Mother’s reading this you know exactly what God is feeling here.
Proverbs says ‘My son pay attention to my words!!’ Pr 5:1; Pr 7:24. Jesus said it also when He often used the phrase “If anyone has an ear to hear let him hear!” Mtt 11:15; Mtt 13:9; Mtt 13:43 and 7 times in Revelation 2 and 3.
Having an ear to hear is a HEART issue. Without an ear to hear we will have TROUBLE in our lives….which is not what God had planned for us.
Yet even those who are Born of His Spirit often still do not see things going well for them and their children. Having an ear to hear is akin to walking in the spirit with God. Walking in the Spirit is being yoked together with the Holy Spirit in our hearts.
Below: I shared this short message last night on His yoke….
And this morning I am still ruminating upon it.
God is a GOOD FATHER and He will chasten His sons lest they be bastards and not sons. Heb 12:8
Being yoked together in our heart requires yieldedness otherwise we will have a hard time walking with Him. We are learning to walk in step with Him. He stops we stop. He goes right we go right…left..we go left…slowly…faster…together! God on His part yields to us as well. He knows our frame that we are but dust. Ps 103:14 So He does not push us or pressure us but gently leads us. Isa 40:11
We are yoked with Him to learn His ways–and in learning His ways things become easier and smoother. The chafing of the yoke becomes lighter. The soul is able to trust the spirit and go together with God instead of pulling in a different direction BECAUSE IT FEARS HIS WAYS.
Ps 103:6 The Lord executes righteousness
And justice for all who are oppressed.
7 He made known His ways to Moses,
His acts to the children of Israel.
8 The Lord is merciful and gracious,
Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.
9 He will not always strive with us,
Nor will He keep His anger forever.
10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
Nor punished us according to our iniquities.
11 For as the heavens are high above the earth,
So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;
12 As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
13 As a father pities his children,
So the Lord pities those who fear Him.
14 For He knows our frame;
He remembers that we are dust.
He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, And carry them in His bosom, And gently lead those who are with young.
The soul is BEING SAVED….which is the picture of the Father chastening His sons and daughters. This is so our soul(the self) becomes a sharer in His holiness(devotion). It is so we are transformed into His image.
Thus God our good father will provide a yoke for you so that this process is not left undone for if we refuse His yoke we are refusing His chastening…and as I said–no true son is without chastening.(Heb 12)
The meek shall inherit the earth and delight themselves in the abundance of peace said David in Ps 37. To become meek we must be yoked to Him. Young bulls are not meek at all. They like to throw their weight around, stick their horns in gates and tear them up with their strong necks. The strong neck of an un-yoked bull speaks of being STIFF NECKED AND REBELLIOUS. God will provide us a suitable yoke to tame us.
Think of Samson! The mighty Bull of a man who loved to throw his weight around was tied to the millstone to grind grain for the Pharisees. His pride was put down. His power was withdrawn. He was severely chastened by the Father and yoked to the arm of the millstone.
God is a good father! Samson gained honour in the end but not in his own way.
God has good plans for each of us but our soul resists Him.
Jesus appealed to all to come unto Me all you who are weary and heavy laden and He would give them rest. He said to take His yoke upon them.
Jesus yoke is easy because of His MEEK HEART. His meekness is always LIFTING YOU UP. His gentleness is always leading you and holding you. His constant care for you appears daily in your particular YOKE.
Your marriage can be a type of yoke that He has arranged to bring you into conformity to His nature.
Your job or business is also probably the main yoke He uses…The daily needs and bills…the people we must deal with…the shortages…the unforeseen problems…the physical challenges …and the mental and emotional challenges…We learn to walk with Jesus leaning fully upon Him and allowing Him to do the work. We become meek and lowly in heart the longer we stay in the yoke.
I was released from the work yoke Dec 4th my 60th birthday….and after 171 days I was rehired by the same Boss who had said to me “I am being selfish here…I do not want to let you go.” So effectively I was put back under the same yoke — a yoke that is quite physically challenging which leaves me totally spent at the end of each day. During those last 5 months and 20 days I used what money I had to survive here and now it is all gone. No plan B any more. All my superannuation gone. At 60 years of age with no assets or retirement funds my soul begins to whine and freak out and want to run away.
Be sure friend–that if you have a plan B God shall make sure it disappears. He has a plan and He has a way. Your ways will fail. In fact I said this yesterday to my wife…that
“Whatever our idol is will become the Cross on which we die!”
There is a death God has prepared by which we glorify God. Peter was used to going wherever he wanted to go. But Jesus said to him…
John 21:18-19 Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.”
God severely chastened his son Peter. Peter thought he had what it took to follow God and to be an Apostle. God had to allow him to fail completely so he would see clearly the difference between his soul’s bravado and his spirit’s dependence upon another Stronger One.
The only way he could follow Jesus and feed Jesus’ sheep was through being YOKED with Jesus….allowing Him to be his strength and ability in all things.
So I am encouraged and I want you to be too. Receive His chastening with thanksgiving. He is setting you up to be more like His son.
And God shall get the glory and you will be glad He does.
