For all the people and all Israel
understood that day
that it had not been
the king’s intent to kill Abner the son of Ner.
Then the king said to his servants,
“Do you not know that a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel?
And I am weak today,
though anointed king;
and these men, the sons of Zeruiah,
are too harsh for me.
The LORD shall repay the evildoer according to his wickedness.”
Too Harsh? Yes,…..severe – churlish, cruel, grievous, hard- hearted impudent, obstinate, prevailed, rough , sore, sorrowful, stiff -necked , stubborn,
Mic 6:8 He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?
It is better to be merciful to our enemies than to hate them and to kill them. It is better to remember that we are saved by grace, and kept every day by grace. We deserve judgement, but have been shown mercy. Therefore show mercy to others, even to those who oppose you.
Religious zeal is always based upon an attempt to please God by self effort. The only thing that pleases God is faith…not just any faith either…but the faith of the Son of God.
There is nothing you can do for God. You can do NO THING of yourself.
Religious zealots try very hard to do many things for God, and if anyone gets in their way they will kill them, thinking that they are doing God a favour. Either physically kill them or with their words…same thing.
We shall reap all that we have sown in this area.
